WHAT IS NEGOTIATIONS?

The Negotiations Competition emulates real life negotiation situations to provide students with an invaluable insight into this form of dispute resolution. Negotiation skills are becoming increasingly important in the legal practice. As the costs of traditional litigation escalate, more and more clients seek to settle matters outside of the courts. Good negotiation skills are also vital even in everyday transactions such as drafting commercial contracts. The Negotiations Competition sees two teams, each of two solicitors, meet to discuss a dispute between their clients.
.
Each team is provided with a description of the fact scenario with some facts known to both teams, and each team having some secrets too. Each team will also be armed with instructions from their client detailing exactly what outcome they should seek – and what should be avoided at all costs. The winner is not necessarily the team that walks away with the better deal, but the one that gets closest to their client’s wishes.
