WHAT IS CLIENT INTERVIEW?
Client Interview is regarded as the most relaxed and enjoyable of the competitions offered by MSLS. Whilst it may not be held in as higher regard as mooting or trial advocacy, its real life application is far more obvious. For the first time, Client Interview will be open to all year groups in 2019.
Client Interview, as the name may suggest, is a mock interview with a client who has come to you, a solicitor, for initial advice on an issue. Client Interview requires little-to-no preparation and tests how well you can react on your feet and manage a situation with your partner. It does not require substantive legal knowledge. When representing a client, it is vital to ensure that you have all the relevant details and the first few consultations with your new client will provide you with the foundation for your lawyer/client relationship.
The Client Interview Competition gives each team of two a set amount of time to ascertain all information necessary to allow you to represent your client effectively, and then some time to reflect on your interview. Competitors must cover all the formalities of an interview, take note of the personal details of the client, the intricacies of the problem and suggest possible courses of action. Assessment is based on how well questions are asked and how well competitors interact with the client and each other.
